The day-glo videos of Wong Ping stop you in your tracks.
He worked as a digital editor for a TV studio in Hong Kong.and has commented that his work is his diary. ‘It’s all about sucking in stuff from society’. The result is a kind of twisted morality which comments on political values in a wide sense.
Sex rears its head throughout in a witty and discomfiting manner. Much of it is just weird. ‘She said this abortion was done for my eyeball’ A praying mantis type cartoon is captioned ‘she was always horny and humorous’.
The work of Wong Ping is wildly and exhaustingly inventive. He turns the puerile into art and drags the viewer along for the ride. My recommendation is that you go with it: you may feel a little queasy at times but you won’t forget the experience.
Wong Ping: Heart Digger is at the Camden Arts Centre until 15 September.
